Who can send an idea
School students, roughly grades 6 to 12. You need a referring adult: a school, a teacher, a parent or a tuition mentor. No prior research experience, laboratory or worked-out topic is required.
Where it can go
Yes. A mentor with a doctorate works on the writing with you, and the finished article can go to your school's journal or magazine, to the Atom & Ink journal, or to both. We mentor the writing; sending it to the school and working with its editors stays between you and your school.
Three kinds of paper
1,500 to 2,500 words
New Concept Paper
A student proposes an idea of their own and argues it from evidence.
2,000 to 3,000 words
Review Paper
A student reads widely on one question and reports what the field currently knows.
800 to 1,500 words
Perspective or Opinion Piece
A student takes a position on something contested and defends it.
